CM Earth Anchor Installation Guide

This guide provides valuable information for suppliers and installers of CM Earth Anchors, covering installation methods and techniques.

Anchor Options:

Aluminum Alloy: Available in 1 models.

Galvanized steel: Designed for very hard or rocky soils, available more tham 10 models.

Holding Capacities:

Anchors offer holding capacities in normal soil ranging from 300 to 5000 lbs (135 kg to 2250 kg).

Versatility and Flexibility:

The CM Earth Anchor is designed for use in a wide range of soil conditions, providing installers with greater flexibility compared to other anchoring systems.

Key Information Covered:

Installation Details: Step-by-step guidance on the installation process.

Special Soil Conditions: Considerations for installing in challenging soil environments.

Benefits of CM Anchoring Systems:

Economic: Cost-effective solution for various anchoring needs.

Lightweight: Easy to handle and transport.

Versatile: Suitable for a wide range of applications, both large and small.

Anchor Holding Capacity and Soil Conditions

Soil Class Variation: Anchor holding capacity varies significantly depending on the soil class. Generally, lower numbered soil classes (indicating denser, stronger soils) offer higher holding capacity, while higher numbered classes (representing softer, weaker soils) have lower capacity.

Soil Classification Complexity: Determining the precise soil class can be challenging. For example, clay's class can range from 4 to 8, depending on its consistency (from very stiff to very soft). Similarly, cohesionless soils like sand and gravel have a wide range of classes depending on their density and compactness.

Factors Influencing Soil Classification: Water content significantly impacts soil classification.

Soil Testing Methods:

Torque Probe: Offers quick and convenient on-site soil classification.

Core Samples: Provide detailed soil analysis but are more expensive and time-consuming.

Driving Resistance as an Indicator: The resistance encountered while driving the CM anchor can provide a valuable "seat-of-the-pants" assessment of soil class. High driving resistance generally indicates stronger soil and better anchoring potential. Conversely, easy driving may suggest softer soil, necessitating the use of a larger CM anchor to achieve the desired holding capacity.

Anchor-Locking Verification: To ensure the required holding capacity is achieved, especially in uncertain soil conditions, simple anchor-locking tests are highly recommended.

INSTALLATION

The first step in any installation is to select the proper anchor for the job. Keep in mind the maximum load expected and add a reasonable safety factor.

DRIVING THE ANCHOR

The CM® can be driven at any angle. In guy applications the angle of the installation should closely match the angle of the guy line. Start by inserting the drive steel into the anchor body. Use a sledgehammer, fence post driver or a power driven jack-hammer to drive the anchor to the proper depth. Fill hole made by anchor with soil. This will not allow water to seep down to the anchor.

MECHANICAL ANCHOR LOCKING

After the anchor has been driven to depth, the drive steel is retracted from the anchor. Pull back on the anchor cable to toggle the anchor into the perpendicular (anchor-locked) position. In average soils a rule of thumb is that the length of pull should equate to the length of the anchor. Movement will depend on soil; softer soils may require a longer distance than harder

soils.

HAND ANCHOR LOCKING

The smaller CM models may be locked by hand. Insert the drive steel through the cable loop or wrap the cable around the drive steel to fashion a "T" handle. Pull on the drive steel to anchor-lock the anchor. A fulcrum is also very useful in locking anchors by hand. The CM "hand hook" is also available.

JACKS

Ordinary automotive bumper jacks or handyman jacks work well on medium and larger sized anchors. By adding legs to the jack to form a tri-pod, angled pulls are achieved  with greater ease.
