Preformed Dead-ends (also known as Guy-Grips)
Feb 04, 2026| If the earth anchor is the foundation, the preformed dead-end is the specialized component that secures the guy wire to the anchor rod or the utility pole.
What is a Preformed Dead-end?
In the old days of utility work, securing a high-tension guy wire required heavy, bolt-on clamps that looked like medieval torture devices. Today, we use Preformed Dead-ends-a set of high-strength helical (spiral) wires designed to wrap around a cable.
The "Snake Grip" Principle
These grips work on the principle of uniform radial pressure. Instead of crushing the wire at one or two bolt points, the spiral design grips the cable along its entire length. The harder the wind blows or the more the pole leans, the tighter the spiral "bites" into the cable.
Why They Rule the Utility World
Utility companies have almost entirely switched to these for three main reasons:
Tool-Free Installation: You don't need a heavy impact wrench. A lineman can wrap these on by hand (though a little muscle is required). This is a lifesaver when you're 40 feet up a pole.
Visual Assurance: It's easy to inspect. If the spirals are neat and the ends are snapped into place, it's secure. With bolts, you never truly know if they are torqued correctly without a wrench.
Stress Distribution: Because they distribute the load evenly, they prevent "fatigue breaks" where the wire meets the hardware-a common failure point in older systems.
The "Secret" Language of Color Codes
If you look closely at a utility pole, you'll see a splash of color on the tips of these grips. This isn't for decoration; it's a size coding system to prevent dangerous mismatches.
| Color Code | Common Cable Diameter (Inches) | Why it matters |
| Yellow | 1/4" | Using a Yellow grip on a Black cable means it will slide right off. |
| Black | 5/16" | The "Goldilocks" fit is essential for the friction to work. |
| Orange | 3/8" | Usually used for heavier transmission-grade guy wires. |
| Green | 7/16" | For heavy-duty industrial or corner-pole applications. |
The Full Assembly
To visualize the whole system we've covered so far:
Earth Anchor: Screwed into the soil.
Anchor Rod: The metal eye sticking out of the ground.
Preformed Dead-end: Loops through the anchor eye and wraps around...
The Guy Wire: Which goes up to support the pole.
