Earth anchors have become an essential tool for arborists and landscapers, providing robust, yet discreet, support for trees. In contrast to traditional, visible staking methods, these underground solutions offer superior stability while promoting healthier tree establishment and maintaining a clean, professional aesthetic in the landscape.
The two primary uses of earth anchors in tree care are Root Ball Stabilization for new plantings and Corrective Staking for leaning trees.
1. Root Ball Stabilization for Newly Transplanted Trees
When a tree is dug up from a nursery, its root system is significantly reduced. This leaves the tree vulnerable to wind-throw and movement during its critical establishment phase. Earth anchors solve this problem by securing the tree's base directly from below the ground.
How it Works: A typical root ball stabilization system involves driving or screwing three or more earth anchors (such as percussion-driven or helical anchors) into the soil surrounding the root ball. These anchors are connected to the root ball itself via underground cables or straps.
The Benefit: By locking the root ball firmly in place, the system prevents the tree from swaying excessively. This stability is crucial because constant movement can tear fine, new roots as they try to grow into the surrounding soil. By minimizing movement, earth anchors create an ideal environment for the tree to successfully knit its root system into the native landscape soil. This leads to faster establishment and a more structurally sound tree in the long run.
2. Corrective Staking and Aesthetic Support
Earth anchors are the preferred method for correcting the posture of a leaning tree or providing temporary support to a semi-mature tree, as they eliminate the need for unsightly hardware above the ground.
How it Works: For a leaning tree, earth anchors are driven into the ground on the side opposite the lean. Cables or straps connect the anchors to the lower trunk or root collar and are then tensioned to gently pull the trunk back to an upright position.
The Benefit: The entire system-earth anchors, cables, and tensioning devices-is positioned entirely below the surface or covered by mulch. This offers several distinct advantages over traditional staking with poles and ropes:
Aesthetic Superiority: There are no visible stakes, ropes, or wires to detract from the beauty of the tree and the surrounding landscape.
Preventing Trunk Damage: Traditional stakes can rub and chafe the bark, leading to open wounds that invite pests and disease. Underground anchoring eliminates this risk, preserving the health and integrity of the trunk.
Promoting Strength: The subtle, secure hold allows the trunk to sway a small amount, which encourages the development of a thicker, stronger trunk and a tapered base, making the tree more resilient once the anchors are eventually removed.
